春の雪降りつつ早む夜の刻   飯田龍太

haru no yuki furitsutsu hayamu yoru no toki

            spring snow falling

            the night hours tick away

            faster

There exists in this haiku and translation an exquisite parallel between the light — the whiteness of Spring snow — and the dark of night; also, between the silence of falling snow and night quieter than day and the faint ticking sound of the clock’s seconds hand ticking with the tick or ticking sound of snow against the glass pane. Amazing counterpoint and harmony. Thank You. – Donna Fleischer
