徴兵もなくて絵踏もなき時代    米田清文

chôhei mo nakute efumi mo naki jidai

the era

without the draft

 without ‘efumi’ loyalty test

Fay’s Note:   During Edo period (1603-1867), being a Christian was illegal.   ‘efumi’ test (trodding on a plate with Virgin Mary or other Christian symbol on it) was conducted   It was done often in the spring and it became a spring kigo.
