男らの汚れるまへの祭足袋   飯島晴子 

otoko ra no yogoreru mae no matsuri-tabi

            belonging to men

            festival tabi socks

            before they get dirty

Fay’s Note:   This haiku was in a haiku collection “Kanbare” (“Clear Winter Sky”),  published in 1990.

Carriers of ‘mikoshi,’ a miniature shrine at a festival, only wear tabi socks; i.e. no shoes.
